Armenia approved strategic energy development program until 2040

The Armenian government approved strategic energy development program until 2040 and activity plan for its implementation.

The main purpose of the document is strategic planning of the energy sector, taking into account the fact that the previous documents became irrelevant and there is a need to revise the strategy in accordance with modern requirements.

The document provides for the main directions of development of the industry and the measures proposed for their implementation.

Among the main directions are the maximum use of renewable energy potential, the implementation of energy saving opportunities, the extension of the service life of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP, the full implementation of the program for the construction of the North-South energy transit corridor, as well as the gradual liberalization of the Armenian energy market.

The document also defines the main priorities for the development of the energy industry, production facilities, high-voltage and distribution network and the electricity market. The document also specifies development of regional cooperation in this area, issues of gas and heat supply, energy conservation and others.
