Electricity generation in the Russian Federation in 2023 increased by 0.7%, to 1.178 trillion kWh, in December - by 2.1%, to 117 billion kWh, Rosstat reported.

“Electricity generation at all types of power plants in December 2023 amounted to 117 billion kWh. Compared to December 2022, generation increased by 2.1%. Compared to November 2023, generation volumes increased by 11.7%. In 2023, 1,178 billion kWh of electricity was produced, which is 0.7% more than in 2022,” Rosstat reports.

Thermal power plants generated 79 billion kWh in December 2023, which is 0.8% less than in December 2022, but 15.4% more than in November 2023. In 2023, thermal power plants produced 750 billion kWh, which is 1.6% more than in 2022. Thermal power plants remain the main supplier of electricity for the country's unified power system, producing about 63.7% of all electricity generation in the country.

Hydroelectric power plants produced 17.2 billion kWh of electricity, up 12.8% from December 2022 and 2% from November 2023. In 2023, electricity generation at hydroelectric power plants amounted to 203 billion kWh, which is 1.7% more than in 2022.

Electricity generation at nuclear power plants increased by 6.3% compared to December 2022, amounting to 20.4 billion kWh. Compared to November 2023, the increase was 7.6%. In 2023, electricity generation at nuclear power plants reached 217 billion kWh, which is 2.8% less than in 2022.

Electricity generation from renewable energy sources in December amounted to 668 million kWh. This is 16% less than in December 2022, but 4.1% more than in November 2023. In 2023, electricity generation from renewable energy sources increased by 8.3% compared to 2022, to 7.8 billion kWh
