In Kazakhstan, as of the beginning of 2022, there are 134 renewable energy (RES) generating facilities with a total installed capacity of 2010 MW. The volume of electricity production by these facilities (solar power plants (SPPs), wind power plants (WPPs), biogas plants (BGPs), small HPPs) for 2021 amounted to 4220.3 million kWh. This is stated in the Review of the renewable energy market in the Republic of Kazakhstan, prepared by the Market Development Department of Samruk-Energo JSC.

According to the document, all renewable energy projects in Kazakhstan are implemented at the expense of investors' own and borrowed funds. At the same time, the state provides support in the form of a guaranteed purchase of the entire volume of RES electricity at fixed tariffs or auction prices and distributes it among traditional generation at a tariff for RES support. In addition, for small-scale RES projects, the state provides partial subsidy of costs at the level of local executive bodies.

Renewable energy in the country is developng steadily. Over the past 7 years, the installed capacity of renewable energy facilities has grown by almost 11 times - from 177.52 MW in 2014 to 2010 MW in 2021.

As noted in the analytical review with reference to the data of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the resource potential of RES in Kazakhstan is estimated by the following indicators:

- wind energy - 920 billion kWh/year;

- hydro potential - 62 billion kWh/year;

- solar energy - 2.5 billion kWh/year;

- thermal potential of geothermal waters - 4.3 GW.

The  largest Kazakhstani electric power holding JSC "Samruk-Energo" today owns 5 renewable energy facilities. Their total electricity production in 2021 amounted to 325.3 million kWh. This is 7.7% of the electricity produced by all renewable energy facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Samruk-Energy JSC has compiled a list of projects, including "green" energy transition projects, included in the Company's Development Strategy for 2022-2031. We are talking about the WPPs under construction today in the area of the city of Yereymentau in the Akmola region with a capacity of 50 MW and the Enbekshikazakh district of the Almaty region for 60 MW, as well as projects for a combined wind farm in the Shelek corridor with a capacity of 240 MW with a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 71 MW; counter-regulating Kerbulak HPP on the Ili River with a capacity of 40.6 MW.
