The electricity industry in Kyrgyzstan has been going through periods of growth and decline for many years. The electric power industry is affected by weather conditions, various economic factors, technological advancements, population size, as well as export and import activities between neighboring countries.

Based on open data from Kyrgyz Energy Settlement Center OJSC, Tazabek examined the dynamics of the volume of imported electricity in Kyrgyzstan over 8 years from the main importing countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

However, since 2023, Russia has become the new electricity supplier for our country.

Chairman of the Board of the National Energy Holding Taalaibek Baygaziev stated this in May. The planned volume of electricity from Russia to Kyrgyzstan is 500 million kWh of electricity.

Uzbekistan

In 2022, Uzbekistan supplied Kyrgyzstan in transit from Turkmenistan 1.3 billion kWh, which is 2.5 times more than in 2021. At the same time, from 2014 to 2020, there was no import of electricity from Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan.

This large supply of electricity may be due to the fact that in 2021 the volume of electricity consumption exceeded the volume of production.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan was a supplier of electricity to Kyrgyzstan throughout the period, but import volumes fluctuated significantly. After no supplies in 2017 and 2018, 269 million kWh were interchanged in 2019.

Then in 2020 and 2021 there is an increase in imports of Kazakh electricity, which can also be explained by the peak in electricity consumption in Kyrgyzstan and a decrease in production.

Tajikistan

Unlike the previous two countries, Tajikistan supplied electricity to the country only in 2014 and 2015, after which Tajikistan did not have a significant impact on electricity imports until 2022.

Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan has become a major supplier of electricity to Kyrgyzstan in 2020-2022, supplying 1.3 billion kWh of electricity to the country over two years.
