In 2023, energy industry organizations met the key indicators set by the Government.

A reliable supply of energy resources to consumers in the real sector of the economy and the population has been ensured.

As Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said before the start of the final meeting of the Ministry, systematic work continued in 2023 to update the fixed production assets of energy sector organizations and improve the reliability of the energy system. With the support of the Head of State, investment projects important for the industry have been implemented.

The most ambitious event was the commissioning of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. Since the inclusion of the first power unit in the unified energy system, the plant has generated 25.4 billion kWh of electricity. This made it possible to replace over 6.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

The project was a good stimulus for the growth of electricity consumption in the country - at the end of 2023, this figure increased by 6.6%, or 2.5 billion kWh, compared to 2022 and amounted to 41.1 billion kWh. At the same time, 28.5% of the total volume is provided by electricity generation by the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.

The growth in electricity consumption is ensured both by the real sector of the economy and by the population, primarily in those areas where incentive measures have been introduced and are in effect. This is the development of energy-intensive industries, electric transport, and the use of electricity for heating and hot water supply.

Work on modernizing power grids will be expanded in Belarus.

To meet the growing needs for electricity in the real sector of the economy and the population, work is being widely carried out in the country to reconstruct the electrical grid infrastructure. In 2022, power supply organizations built and modernized 1.7 thousand km of electrical networks, in 2023 - already about 2.7 thousand km, in 2024 the goal is to increase this volume to 3 thousand km.

Along with the modernization of electrical networks, work continues on the reconstruction of substations of various voltage classes. Over the past year, 20 such facilities were commissioned. Among them are the substations “Severo-Zapadnaya”, “Atlant”, “Zhabinka”, “Worsted Plant”, “Dubrova”, “Aerodromnaya”, “Cherkassy” and others. Most of these projects were implemented using the latest automation and digitalization technologies, which significantly increases the reliability of power supply to consumers.

At four large power plants - Berezovskaya and Lukomlskaya GRES, Novopolotskaya CHPP and Minsk CHPP-5, the main work on the construction of peak-standby power sources with the installation of highly maneuverable generating equipment with a total capacity of 800 MW was completed. The commissioning of these facilities is planned for this year.
