Infographic: development of the electric power industry in Uzbekistan in 2017-2022

In recent years, major reforms in the energy sector have been carried out in our country. As a result, the volume of electricity generation in 2022 amounted to 74.3 billion kWh, having increased by 26% compared to 2016 and amounted to 15.3 billion kWh. The volume of electricity supplied to consumers increased by 36.5% compared to 2016 and amounted to 16.7 billion kWh.

Over the past 6 years, the volume of production amounted to 396.1 billion kWh, of which 83% (327.4 billion kWh) was accounted for by thermal power plants. Hydroelectric and thermal power plants generated 36.5 and 28.7 billion kWh and with a share of 9% and 7%, respectively. The amount of electricity generated from solar and wind energy was 50 and 17 million kWh, respectively.

In 2017-2022, $10.2 billion was invested in the electric power industry. In 2021, the first large solar photovoltaic power plant in the country was put into operation in the Navoi region. In May 2022, the second large solar photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 100 MW was put into operation in the Samarkand region. Also put into operation 6 new thermal power plants with a total capacity of 1,374 MW (total capacity of 1,574 MW). In general, over the past 6 years, the volume of new power generation capacity has exceeded 5,000 MW. This is more than 1.5 times more than in the previous 25 years.

During this period, 46 thousand km of power transmission lines and 14 thousand transformer points were updated (for comparison, over the past 25 years, 9.3 thousand km of power transmission lines and 4.8 thousand transformers have been repaired). As a result, the power supply of more than 7,500 microdistricts has improved. By the end of 2023, it is planned to put into operation 7 power plants in our country with a total capacity of 2910.6 MW (1 thermal power plant, 1 wind, 3 solar and 2 hydroelectric power plants).

The Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan for 2022-2026 provides for an increase in the capacity of solar and wind power plants to 8,000 MW, and the capacity of hydroelectric power plants to 2,920 MW (10,920 MW in total).
