Kyrgyzstan is considering the possibility, together with the state corporation Rosatom, to build a low-capacity nuclear power plant (NPP) on the territory of the republic. This was announced on Thursday in the parliament of the republic by the Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibraev.

"We are studying the possibility of building a low-capacity nuclear power plant with Rosatom, which will consist of two power units of 55 MW each," he said.

According to him, earlier an agreement on the joint construction of a nuclear power plant was signed with the Russian company, but only a road map. At present, the Russian side is studying the land plots of Kyrgyzstan, on which a nuclear power plant can potentially be built. The situation is complicated by the fact that almost the entire territory of the republic is located in a zone of increased seismic hazard.

According to Ibraev's forecasts, if the project is approved by the parties, its construction will take about 6-7 years.

It is expected that the nuclear power plant will consist of two power units.

Rosatom and Kyrgyzstan signed a corresponding memorandum in January last year as part of the World Expo 2022 in the UAE. As emphasized in the document, the parties express their interest in developing cooperation in the construction of a small nuclear power plant in Kyrgyzstan based on the RITM-200N reactor. The memorandum also provides for assistance in the development of the Kyrgyz nuclear infrastructure and joint work to improve the skills of scientific and technical personnel in various areas of the peaceful use of atomic energy.
