The Moldovan authorities are preparing for privatization the companies Furnizarea Energiei Electrice Nord and RED Nord, which own the power grids of the north of the country. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Republic Viktor Parlikov in an interview with the NordNews portal.

“We are seriously considering the possibility of privatization or public-private partnership on the basis of these enterprises in order to attract investment. On the other hand, to have an environment that is less prone to corruption. We want to prepare RED Nord and FEE Nord for privatization, including in order to get a good price for them. To do this, it is necessary to increase their efficiency,” Parlikov said.

There are three electricity distribution network operators in Moldova: a private company, Premier Energy, and two state-owned companies, RED Nord and RED Nord Vest. In accordance with EU directives, these companies have separated the supply and distribution of electricity. Thus, FEE Nord supplies, and RED Nord distributes.

Today, up to 95% of all electricity imports to the republic come from Moldavskaya GRES, owned by PJSC Inter RAO, located in the unrecognized Transnistria and operating on gas supplies from Russia. Moldova buys about 303 thousand MWh from this enterprise every month, the rest of the volumes are provided by local combined heat and power plants, as well as Romanian and Ukrainian suppliers.
