Russia and Kyrgyzstan are working to assess the key aspects of the low power nuclear power plant project in the republic and its technical parameters, Alexander Sternik, director of the third department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev said that a number of countries, including Kyrgyzstan, intend to legally formalize projects for the construction of nuclear power plants with the Russian nuclear state corporation this year.

“In 2022, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the state corporation Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan on the construction of a low power nuclear power plant. A justification for the project has been prepared. It was sent to the Kyrgyz side. Work is currently underway to assess key aspects of the project and technical parameters, with particular attention to its public acceptability,” the diplomat said.

In the summer, Likhachev and Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov discussed expanding cooperation between Russia and Kyrgyzstan in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and agreed to continue consultations on the project for the construction of a low power nuclear power plant on Kyrgyz territory. In November last year, the countries signed the terms of reference for the preliminary feasibility study of the station construction project.
