The installation of special equipment has begun at the power facilities of Kazakhstan, which will allow regulating the flows and distribution of power in the Unified Power System (UPS) of the Republic.

By implementing a digital solutions and providing services to the System Operator in the period from 2021 to 2025, Samruk-Energy JSC plans to obtain financial benefits of more than 4 billion tenge.

The unique project is being implemented on the platform of the subsidiaries of Samruk-Energo JSC - Moinak HPP JSC and Ekibastuz SDPP-1 LLP. This is a joint project of KEGOC JSC and Samruk-Energo JSC to introduce an automatic frequency and power control system (AFPCS).

As explained in the electric power holding, in order to ensure the quality of electricity and the reliability of the operation of generating equipment in any power system, equality between production and consumption of electricity must be ensured. In Kazakhstan, this balance is currently kept “manually”: from the System Operator (JSC “KEGOC”) to regional operators and power plants. With this method of regulation, imbalances are inevitable, which are compensated for by the services of regulation of neighboring countries on commercial basis.

According to Serik Tyutebaev, Managing Director for Production and Asset Management of Samruk-Energo JSC, AFPCS increases the speed of the system's reaction to imbalance by an order of magnitude. The architecture of the system is designed to eliminate the imbalance in a matter of minutes according to established standards in a time of no more than 15 minutes.

“The strategic initiative is aimed at ensuring the automatic maintenance of the balance of the UPS of Kazakhstan, the most efficient maneuverability of power plants' generation involved in regulation, high speed and accuracy of reaction to imbalances. AFPCS is the first experience in the industry, which will allow achieving the independence of the energy sector of Kazakhstan, "said the representative of Samruk-Energo.

Samruk-Energo JSC is the largest power holding company in Kazakhstan, 100% of which are owned by Samruk-Kazyna NWF JSC established in 2007. Main directions of its’ activity: production of electric and thermal energy; transmission, distribution and sale of electrical energy; mining of thermal coal. The holding includes power and coal enterprises, including Ekibastuz SDPP-1 LLP, Ekibastuz Plant SDPP -2  JSC, Bogatyr Komir LLP, Almaty Power Plants JSC, Moinakskaya HPP JSC, JSC Shardara HPP  and others.
