On April 6, the Information Center for Atomic Technologies (ICAT) under the Uzatom Agency hosted the international teleconference “Atoms for the Country”, which brought together experts and young participants from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

- Nuclear technologies are the key to improving the quality of life and creating a more favorable environment for our future. Rosatom makes a significant contribution to this progress by developing technologies that are already helping to improve the lives of millions of people today, Stanislav Levitsky, director of the office of the state corporation Rosatom in Belarus, emphasized in his welcoming speech.

Nadezhda Zdanevich, Head of the NPP Technical Support Department of the Belenergo State Production Association, spoke about the role that nuclear energy plays for the economic and infrastructure development of the region.

- Rosatom is building nuclear power plants all over the world. Such a project has also been implemented in Belarus. Now there is the first nuclear power plant in the history of the country. And the city of Ostrovets, near which the nuclear power plant was built, celebrated its birthday in 2022 in the status of a city, having turned from a village into a city of nuclear scientists in 10 years. On March 25, as part of the final stage of the physical start-up of the second power unit, a controlled fission chain reaction was successfully carried out in the reactor, the power unit of the Belarusian NPP was brought to the minimum controlled power level, the expert noted.

Nuclear technologies serve man in many areas. For example, ionizing radiation processing technologies can increase the shelf life of food products by several times. Radiation technology used in airport security screening systems provides security. Radioisotope dating helps determine the age of archaeological finds and works of art. But there is one industry in which nuclear technology saves people's lives in the literal sense of the word. This is nuclear medicine. Aigul Saduakasova, Head of the Nuclear Medicine Center of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Medical Center of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, spoke about how nuclear medicine is developing in Kazakhstan.

The success of an entire industry, especially such a complex one, depends on the professionalism and involvement of people. To work in the nuclear industry, which is one of the most promising and in demand, you should pay attention to the exact and natural sciences. Shavkat Abdukamilov, Executive Director of the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, spoke about where to go to study in order to become part of the nuclear industry.

- In 2018, a decision was made to build a nuclear power plant, and this decision prompted the creation of an entire strategy for the development of nuclear potential in the country. Work with the public in the implementation of nuclear energy projects is one of the key areas. Today's event is an important event in terms of career guidance for young people, where there is an opportunity to learn more about the experience of other countries that have already implemented similar projects, as well as countries that are only at the beginning of their journey. I noticed that both students and schoolchildren watched and listened to the speeches with great interest, including the topic of how personnel training for the nuclear energy industry is going on in Uzbekistan. Perhaps some schoolchildren will choose NRNU MEPhI, which is one of the best universities that train professionals for the nuclear industry. Perhaps, having visited ITCAT, they will think about the profession of an atomic engineer, said Shavkat Abdukamilov.

More than 150 students of specialized universities and colleges became participants of the teleconference.

- The teleconference between the countries opened many new things for me. It was interesting to learn how technologies are developing in different countries, what are the promising areas of the nuclear industry, how our neighbors work with nuclear technologies and what is happening in Uzbekistan,  Aizhamal Kalbaeva, a student of the Tashkent branch of NRNU MEPhI, shared her impressions of the event.

This is the second international teleconference between information centers of different countries. The first took place in December 2021 between ICAT in Astana and ICAT in Tashkent. This year the geography of participants has expanded, and for the first time four countries took part in the event.
