The Moldovan government at a meeting on Tuesday approved the creation of the Ministry of Energy, and also approved the structure of the new body.

The new government of Moldova, headed by Prime Minister Dorin Rechan, was created on February 16. The Minister of Energy, the former head of the national energy regulatory agency, Viktor Parlikov, also joined the Cabinet. At the same time, there was no Ministry of Energy in the country.

At a government meeting on Tuesday, projects for the creation of a new ministry, as well as the approval of its structure, were presented. Both documents were approved unanimously.

“The Ministry of Energy will become a new structure, it will take over the entire energy agenda from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development. This also applies to the supply of energy resources, energy efficiency, renewable energy, heat, electricity, natural gas, oil products,” Parlikov said.

According to him, the central office stuff of the department will include 60 persons, three state secretaries and one secretary general will appear. Seven personse will move from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development to the Ministry of Energy.

The Prime Minister noted that the energy sector is very important for the Moldovan business environment, for small and medium enterprises, as well as for large investments. He also stressed the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of the Environment and other departments.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu in early December demanded that the government take urgent measures to reorganize the energy sector. One option was to create the Ministry of Energy as a separate entity.
