The Russian government has updated the general scheme for locating electric power facilities in the long term, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a government meeting.

“The government has updated the general scheme for locating electric power facilities in the long term, which is of particular importance for sustainable economic growth and the well-being of people,” Mishustin said.

“The main strategic goal is to ensure the reliable operation of the Russian power system, systematically reducing negative  environment impact. To do this, we will actively engage in the development of efficient low-carbon generation,” he said.

According to the Prime Minister, the adopted document provides for the commissioning of new nuclear power units with a total capacity of more than 12,000 MW from this year, as well as the construction of additional hydropower facilities for about another 7,000 MW.

“It is also important to replace the outdated equipment of all types operating power plants with modern and high-tech equipment and lay new power lines. All this will make it possible to fully meet the needs of the industrial sector and our citizens in energy resources," Mishustin said.
