The third meeting of energy ministers of the SCO member states was held

On March 14, 2023, the third meeting of energy ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states chaired by the Republic of India was held via videoconference with the participation of the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bolat Akchulakov.

Mr. Hardipa Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Housing and Urban Affairs of the Republic of India delivered a welcoming speech online.

During the meeting, a document was adopted for further cooperation in the energy sector of the SCO member states - "Joint Statement on New Fuels and Modeling in the Energy Sector". The document will expand mutually beneficial cooperation, including technological cooperation, in the sector of new types of fuel in order to unite the efforts of developing countries-producers and consumers of fuel, and also contributes to the development of an inclusive energy policy and setting goals for the transformation of energy systems.

In his speech, Bolat Akchulakov noted that on the initiative of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan is developing the SCO Energy Strategy. The document will include the main directions for further cooperation in the energy sector of the SCO member states until 2030.

The chairmanship in the SCO bodies in June 2023 passes to Kazakhstan from India. In this regard, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bolat Akchulakov invited colleagues from the relevant ministries of the SCO member states to take part in the SCO Energy Forum, which will be held in October 2023 in Astana.

For reference: The next meeting of the energy ministers of the SCO member states is scheduled for June 2024.

The energy ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries, following an online meeting on Tuesday, issued a joint statement recognizing the critical role of new fuels and calling for closer cooperation in joint projects. Indian Oil and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced this on Tuesday.

“SCO members adopted a joint statement recognizing the critical role of new fuels and calling for closer cooperation between states,” Singh Puri tweeted.

He also said that the meeting participants "discussed the status and prospects of the changing global and regional energy agenda."

“I spoke about the steps taken by India to stimulate the upstream sector and to achieve the goals of the energy transition,” added Singh Puri.

He recalled that the online meeting of the SCO energy ministers took place as part of India's chairmanship of this organization.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation reported that the Minister, Nikolai Shulginov, at a meeting called on other countries to expand the depoliticized dialogue in the energy sector, including on the basis of an association.

Currently, the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which was established in 2001, are India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have the status of observer countries, while Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka have the status of partner countries.
