The World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) has published a report on the development of the sector in the first half of 2023. The figures presented in the document are based on official statistics and estimates from the WWEA.

While the world added 29.8 gigawatts (GW) of wind power capacity in the first half of 2022, 41.2 gigawatts were installed during the same period in 2023, an increase of 38%.

China leads by a wide margin, having installed 23.8 GW in the first six months of 2023, followed by India, Brazil and the US, each of which added more than 2 GW. In two more countries (Germany and France), the increase over six months exceeded 1 GW.

At the end of June this year, the installed wind energy capacity amounted to 976 GW, which is 11.4% more than in the first half of 2022.

The report notes that between July 2022 and June 2023 inclusive, 100 GW of wind power capacity was added globally.

In the second half of this year, a significant increase is predicted (traditionally the fourth quarter is the most “fruitful”), while the installed wind energy capacity in the world will exceed the threshold of 1 million megawatts and by the end of 2023 will reach more than 1045 GW.

WWEA forecasts annual growth to be a record 111.4 GW. Among the world's six largest wind energy markets by installed capacity, three are the BRICS countries (China, India and Brazil).
