Uzbekistan in May-September 2023 will import 1.285 billion kWh of electricity from Tajikistan. This was reported by the press service of the National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan.

“National electric grids of Uzbekistan” and the state national energy company of Tajikistan OSHC “Barki Tojik” on May 12 signed the relevant agreement and contract.

The National Electric Grids of Uzbekistan reminded that Uzbekistan has resumed importing electricity from Tajikistan since 2018 to maintain the balance of power and water resources in Uzbekistan and uninterrupted supply of electricity to consumers.

According to the company, Uzbekistan imported electricity in the following volumes:

  • from April to September 2018 - 1.48 billion kWh;
  • from April to October 2019 - 1.425 billion kWh;
  • from May to September 2020 - 566.7 million kWh.

According to a letter dated July 13, 2020 from OSHC "Barki Tojik", due to a decrease in the water level of the Vakhsh River by 50% and a decrease in water at the Nurek HPP by 10 m compared to 2019, the supply of electricity was partially suspended from July 16, 2020 to Uzbekistan.

After that, Uzbekistan imported electricity from Tajikistan in the following volumes:

in May-September 2021 - 1.146 billion kWh;

in April-September 2022 - 823.2 million kWh.

According to the Agency of Statistics, Uzbekistan in January-March 2023 reduced electricity production by 5% compared to the same period last year - from 19.5 billion to 18.5 billion kWh.
