Uzbekistan signed agreements with ACWA Power on the construction of two solar photovoltaic power plants, and the construction of a 400 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the Tashkent region has also begun
On March 4, 2023, between the Saudi company "ACWA Power", the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the National Electric Grids of Uzbekistan JSC, investment agreements and agreements on the purchase of electricity were signed.
The agreements provide for the commissioning of two solar photovoltaic stations with a total capacity of 1,400 MW in the Tashkent and Samarkand regions and three energy storage systems with a total capacity of 1,200 MW in the Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand regions.
The agreements provide for the commissioning of a 400 MW solar photovoltaic plant and a 400 MW energy storage system in the Tashkent region, a 1000 MW solar photovoltaic plant and a 400 MW energy storage system in the Samarkand region, as well as a 400 MW energy storage system in the Bukhara region . Also, the projects provide for the construction of high-voltage power lines.
During the event, the construction of a large solar photovoltaic plant with a capacity of 400 MW was launched in the Tashkent region. As a result of the commissioning of this power plant, 900 million kWh of electricity per year will be produced. As a result, 257 million cubic meters of natural gas will be saved and emissions of 360 thousand tons of harmful gases into the atmosphere will be prevented.
It should be noted that by 2030, 35% of electricity in our republic should be produced from renewable energy sources. As a result, 15,000 MW of capacity will be put into operation - 10,000 MW of solar power plants and 5,000 MW of wind power plants.
For reference: Currently in Uzbekistan, ACWA Power is implementing projects for the construction of 5 power plants with a total capacity of 4100 MW, in particular, 4 wind power plants with a capacity of 2600 MW and 1 modern thermal power plant with a capacity of 1500 MW. It should be noted that a modern thermal power plant with a capacity of 1500 MW, being built by the company in the Syrdarya region, will be put into operation this year.
The Uzbekistan energy storage system project will be the largest storage system in the region, which will play an important role in stabilizing the energy system and developing renewable energy sources in the country.
Energy storage systems prevent unstable renewable energy sources from affecting the grid. With their help, it is possible to accumulate surplus electricity during the period of production and use the accumulated energy during the period of low production.
When these projects are put into operation, it will be possible to provide electricity to 1.2 million households in the republic and prevent the emission of about 1.6 million tons of harmful gases per year.
Investment agreements were signed between the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and ACWA Power, and agreements on the purchase of electricity between JSC Uzbek National Electric Grids and ACWA Power.
During the visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in August 2022, ACWA Power signed an investment cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade, which provides for the introduction of investments in the amount of $ 10 billion over the next five years .
The projects being implemented in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara regions will attract investments of $2.5 billion in the amount of $10 billion. Recently, an agreement was signed with the company on the implementation of a project for the production of green hydrogen in the republic.
