With the commissioning of the second power unit, the annual electricity production at the Belarusian NPP will be about 18.5 billion kWh

The BelNPP makes a significant contribution to strengthening the country's energy security, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said at a meeting of the board of directors of RUE Minskenergo.

The minister spoke about the main stages of the project for the construction of the BelNPP, paid special attention to the issues of its safety.

He recalled that the BelNPP with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW is being built according to the Russian NPP-2006 project, which belongs to the evolutionary projects of NPPs with pressurized water reactors of the third generation. They have improved technical and economic indicators. Their main feature is a combination of active and passive security systems.

On June 10, 2021, the first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was put into commercial operation. Since its inclusion in the unified power system (November 3, 2020), 9.3 billion kWh of electricity has been generated, which made it possible to replace 2.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

With the commissioning of the second power unit, the annual volume of electricity production at nuclear power plants will be about 18.5 billion kWh, which will replace about 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
